Venue : D' Space (60 Weld Quay, 4th floor of Wisma Oh)
Intro to the film : the film (1980's make) featured an extended music video which contrast nature and human made citiscapes to produce a dialogue-less condemnation of human civilisation. Excellent music by Philip Glass add to the poignancy of the feature-length piece. Many people had been so charmed that they watch it repeatedly. It is by-itself a prove of the power of imageries over human(made)-languages. The title is a Hopi Indian word meaning `Life Out of Balance'.

About 10 folks joined the screening -there were some in and out half way thru the film -testifying to its strong polarising power! 1 audience who left half way said he was repulsed by the `horrible' music while some walked in half way to get stuck till the end. The film has such a polarising effect on the audience -you either like it a lot -or not at all ! Why ?

I suppose the film's muted presentation is something not many people are used to. However the popularity of Koyaanisqatsi(1980) spawned a few other similar muted makes in a new `genre': Chronos (year?), Baraka (1990's)And the audience here demanded the showing of Baraka to provide the contrast in a fortnight's time ! Perhaps you should come along to find out the `magic' the K film had on its almost cultist following !

The film contrast the majestic nature with the manacing, monotonous, laughably ridiculous and ultimately destructive human manufactures/fabrications/civilisation. Many memorable scenes : incessant traffic comparing with unstoppable machines movements; queues in railway stations and escallators compared to breakdowns and purposelessness; shiny skyscrappers vs depressing mass housings which needed to be demolished; Quick moments vs static figures. There are moments where hilarity at the beginning turned into some suspicious `machinations' (the process where humans turned into machines) -that include even watching the film itself ???? Yes, there was a scene taking a funny look at theatre audiences !

Speed became the language of the film as real life is slowed down or accelerated to make the various points the film wanted to make. In fairness the music was a great prop to the images despite an objection by the audience who walked out.

The film ended quite pessimistically showing a rocket exploded and burst into flames on its downward spirals....

I think those who missed the film really missed one of our best screenings so far !
